Navigating the Downsizing Journey

Dec 11, 2023

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of being a panel speaker at a downsizing seminar, where the focus was on addressing the concerns of those contemplating downsizing. Whether prompted by a move, financial considerations, health issues, or simply a desire for a less cluttered, more organized lifestyle, downsizing is a huge decision that requires planning and consideration.

Do you want to know one piece of advice that seemed to echo throughout the seminar? Start early.

This was seen in discussions on selling homes, purchasing new spaces, navigating mortgages, understanding the legal aspects, and, of course, the decluttering. The collective wisdom of the panel emphasized the importance of initiating conversations with professionals, your spouse, and family members making the move with you sooner rather than later.

In my session, I shared insights into the important role of decluttering in this process. The physical and mental toll of decluttering can be huge, making a support system in the process so important. Whether it's your partner, children, or professionals, having a team to assist with the logistics of removing items from your home is invaluable.

For those without an immediate support system, I urged participants to reach out to local professionals, such as organizers, to begin discussing their downsizing journey. Many baby boomers looking to downsize have lived in their homes for decades, accumulating many, many possessions along the way. Recognizing that downsizing is inevitable and starting the process gradually—tackling one counter, one box, or one drawer at a time—can make the overall transition smoother.

When it comes to the downsizing process, there are some key questions to be asking: who, when, what, where, and how. Identifying your support system, scheduling decluttering sessions, deciding what items will make the cut, determining where items will go, and planning how the process will unfold are all important pieces when it comes to downsizing.

Two steps you can take today for a smoother downsizing transition tomorrow involve giving away permission to let go and offering a tour of your home. By having conversations with your loved ones about what truly matters to you and sharing the stories behind your possessions, you create a foundation for informed decision-making when it comes to the downsizing process.

Finally, for those facing downsizing alone or lacking physical ability, starting small is key. Tackling one small area at a time can make the process more manageable and less overwhelming. The goal is to only bring what truly matters to the next phase of life, leaving space for new experiences and opportunities.

The downsizing journey is a process that take careful consideration and planning. By starting early, engaging in open conversations, and taking gradual steps, you can pave the way for a smoother transition into the next phase of life, whether it involves a physical move or simply decluttering for a more intentional and spacious living environment.
