Capability vs. Capacity

Aug 22, 2023

We’ve hit mid-summer, and have I been through a whirlwind of events this season! Life has been a rollercoaster, filled with school endings, graduations, sports travel, a wedding, and an overwhelming surge of in-person sessions. It's been two crazy months of living out of a suitcase, eating on the go, and facing challenges head-on.

While this period of time was chaotic, I learned two significant things that happened during this chaotic period and helped get me through, and I believe many of you can relate to them.

The first lesson I learned was the power of asking for help. I'll admit it; I used to be one of those people who thought they could do everything on their own. But you know what? That mindset only leads to exhaustion, breakdowns, and a bunch of new gray hairs – not a recipe for progress, that's for sure! So, during this overwhelming time, I decided to seek assistance in multiple areas. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer!

First, I hired a Virtual Assistant (VA) to provide back-end support for my business. There were several tasks I either procrastinated over, got lost in the details, or simply lacked the time to learn new tech skills from YouTube University. By bringing in a VA, I could delegate these tasks and focus on what truly mattered – serving my audience.

Additionally, with four kids and a busy schedule, trying to be in more than one place at a time wasn’t working. So, I made the decision to hire another lead organizer for my in-person sessions. It was a relief to have someone I trust handle these sessions, ensuring everything runs smoothly while giving me some much-needed breathing space.

Another step I took in finding balance was decluttering my to-do list and calendar. I realized the importance of practicing what I preach. So, I put my podcast recording and editing on hold during the intense months of May and June. I also turned down a few event invitations because I needed some quality time at home to rest and reset.

And guess what? By trusting the process of letting go and making room for what truly mattered most, these past two months have been much more manageable. I entered July with a newfound sense of ease and tranquility.

In July, I even managed to get back on track with my podcasting! I published a new episode on this exact topic: capacity vs. capability. The guest on this episode was the wonderful Kitty Kistler, and the golden nuggets of wisdom she dropped were incredibly freeing. It's exactly the kind of insight we all need to keep moving forward towards a life of less clutter and more authenticity.

If you're interested in listening, you can find the episode on the Less Clutter. More You. podcast. After tuning in, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Send me a DM on Instagram @chesterfieldorganizingco and share your biggest takeaway from the episode.

As we continue through this summer season, I encourage each of you to make room for what matters most in your lives. Don't be afraid to ask for help when needed, declutter your schedules, and create space for rest and self-care. Trust me; it makes all the difference.
